This is probably the most critical time in a puppy’s development. It is vital during this key phase that the puppy be able to interact with people. He should be exposed to many different humans and handled gently and positively to build trust.

Consistent positive exposure to children and men are particularly important. Raising puppies tend to be predominantly a female orientated environment with owners tending to shy away from children handling them for fear of injury and men tending not to share much interaction. This lack of interaction can develop into fear of children and men in adulthood if not handled correctly, particularly within the fear imprinting period.

The correct socialisation will lay down the foundations of the puppy’s future behaviour in many ways. Up to now, it's likely that the only other dogs a puppy will have interacted with are his mother and littermates. Although socialisation with other pets is also important, they must NOT be exposed to unvaccinated animals until they have received their own vaccinations.
